BirchBox Review: August

When I first heard of Birchbox I was excited about the possibility of receiving beauty items right at home.  I wanted  to write about more than just social media.  So here it is, my 1st review of the Birchbox!

Birchbox includes a “take away” with tons of great info.

This month’s info includes:

  1. Tools of the Trade:  Learn more about these makeup artist staples and how to use them like a pro
  2. How to read a label
  3. 5 tips to a better shave
  4. Makeup quick fixes
  5. Super speedy skin care

This month’s box consisted of the following items:

Juicy Couture | Viva la Juicy La Fleur

What they say:  This modern scent is a feminine blend of wild berries, mandarin, and waterlily.  Full size, $70

What I say:  This is a light scent that is sweet (but not too sweet) with a bit of spice.  #Fresh

The Balm Cosmetics | Stainiac in Beauty Queen

What they say:  We’re crazy about this two-in-one lip and cheek stain:  the sheer gel formula stays put for hours. Full size, $17

What I say:  I’ve tried other products like this before and I’m not a big fan.  Whatever goes on my lips must serve its purpose of moisturizing my lips and if not it better have a ton of sparkle or shine in it.  This left my lips feeling dry and I can’t imagine applying it to my cheeks for color.

TwistBand | Hair Tie

What they say:  Give your ponytail a makeover with these colorful, snag-free elastics.  12 pack, $18

What I say:  These ribbon-like elastics are gentle on the hair and come in great colors.  I think they are a great addition to every ponytail-loving woman’s beauty toolbox.

Whish | Shave Crave

What they say:  The organic shea butter in this foam-free shaving cream softens skin as you shave. Full-size, $20

What I say:  While it was super soft and left my skin feeling great, it seemed thick and obstructive while shaving.  I guess I’m old school and prefer a foaming gel shaving cream for $1.99  If you have the cash and want super soft skin during/after shaving then check it out.

BONUS ITEM | Shick 5 blade razor

What they say:  Schick Hydro Silk hydrates skin like no other razor can. This uniquely designed razor goes beyond an incredibly close shave to actually care for your skin. With Water-Activated Moisturizing Serum & 5 Curve-Sensing blades with skin guards to help protect skin from irritation, the Hydro Silk razor leaves skin feeling silky smooth! And it’s preferred over the leading 5 blade razor.

What I say:  I’m somewhat picky about my razors.  I absolutely cannot shave with a 2 blade razor and prefer 3 or more.  5 blades seemed a bit overkill but did the job well.  I guess for me it would come down to price and durability.  If the 5 blade lasted longer than its 3 or 4 blade counterpart then I would look at price.  If the “price per shave” was close I wouldn’t mind an extra blade or 2 on my razor.

Stay tuned for September’s box!
